Accent Types　アクセントの種類

• mora = 拍, the unit of phonology when concerning Japanese
• L = relatively low to nearby 'H' mora
• H = relatively high to nearby 'L' mora
• 平板型（へいばんがた）　Flat　ＬＨ〜Ｈ（Ｈ）
• 頭高型（あたまだかがた）Head　ＨＬ〜Ｌ（Ｌ）
• 中高型（なかだかがた）　Middle　Ｌ〜ＨＨ〜Ｌ（Ｌ）
• 尾高型（おだかがた）　　Flat Drop　ＬＨ〜Ｈ（Ｌ）

下がり目（さがりめ）is the last mora that is pronounced high in a non 平板型 word. A 平板型 does not have a 下がり目.

• 助数詞の一拍目で下がる（drops after the first mora of the counter part）

前部末型 (Accent on Number Part)

Accent is usually on last mora of number except for those bolded. This set of counters regularly have their accent on the number side and drop before the counter. This change that shifts the accent over is caused by 長音、促音、and ン. This category is popular among 1-kanji-character counters. New counters usually fall in this type.

Notes

• つまら＼ない comes from a verb 詰まる（つま＼る）so follows that verbs accent pattern
  
• Newer vs Traditional Accent: both are occurring variations; many speakers alternate between both and sometimes the traditional form is the pattern more used for a given word. These choices of which to use depend on the adjective and which form it's conjiguated in. Somethings to observe are 無声母音 (voiceless), ways the word can sound less sharp or how close together multiple 下がり目 are. For ex: people say し＼ろく・な＼る　more than　しろ＼く・な＼る
  
• The accent of な＼い after an accent 〜く形 may greatly diminish leading it to be heard ＬＬ in fast speech

「〜の」⇨ 平板型

Explanation 説明

There are several words that loose there accent when connected to の. This change occurs in two places:

1. for 尾高型 words Ｌ〜Ｈ（Ｌ）
2. for words that have a 二重母音 (diphthong) or double sounded vowel at the end〈きのう、おととい〉

However this pattern does not apply to words relating to numerals, counters, or order. Another time this pattern may not occur is when under the influence of a silenced vowel. Also some words may occur as either their original form or new form. Since the original form has a fall early in the phrase, the original form is used a lot for emphasis.

Silenced vowels（母音の無声化）occur for rows い段　and う段 intersecting with columns か行、さ行、た行、は行、ぱ行, but only when they come before those columns. Simply put, if the vowel that comes between any combination of k・s・t・h・p, is 'i' or 'u' it will automatically become a whispered (voiceless, silenced, etc..) sound. Ex: くち k(u)chi、ちから ch(i)kara、つき ts(u)ki、すきやき s(u)kiyaki、だれひとり dareh(i)tori

Placing the Accent (下がり目)

There are spots where the accent (下がり目) is harder to place.

Long Vowels / Nasal

An accent is harder to place following a long vowel (長音) or a syllabic nasal (撥音). In principle placing the accent after either is avoided. There are exceptions to this; like this YouTuber saying コーン茶 (コー＼ンちゃ).

Sequemce of Vowels: -ai

The accent is harder to place on the 'i' of -ai [-kai, -sai, -tai, etc...].

Devoiced Vowels (無声化母音)

The accent is harder to place on the mora of a devoiced vowel. Like 優越感 (yuuets(u)kan, ゆうえ＼つかん　OR　ゆうえつ＼かん).
