USB drive with atleast 5 GB of storage

Download
MacOS Sierra
from the App Store (cancel out of the installation) -
Open Finder and navigate to
Applications
directory -
Right click on
Install macOS Sierra
and selectShow Package Contents
. Drop down toResources
and selectcreateinstallmedia

Launch a Terminal window

Type
sudo
followed by dragging the path ofcreateinstallmedia

Type
--volume
followed by the path of the USB drive's volume -
Type
--applicationpath
followed by the path ofInstall macOS Sierra.app

The fully formed command line would look like this (newlines added for clarity):
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Sierra/ --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app

Hit Enter to run the command followed by the root password (when prompted)

Wait patiently while the Recovery disk is being created.
- Shutdown your Mac
- Insert the USB stick/drive
- Power on the Mac and hit the Option key immediately and hold it down
- You will be presented with a boot menu with one of the options being your Recovery disk
