Wine List in France

My Personal Top Wines: by Region

This is an arbitrary good list of wines I like, don't be offended if your favorite wine is not there. I have limited tasting time, and have mostly choose little family owned producers

Everything here is Organic, most are biodynamic and some are natural.

I have visited most of the winerys myself, and now I order directly from them or by my local wine-shop that actually helps me find more wine of this quality.

Loire

Probably my fav white wine region, I love the floral and sometimes minerality of these wines. There is always a good reason to open any of these bottles. It is also a very beautiful region to visit where you find accomodation on old castles like Chteau de Beaujeu.

  • Vincent Pinard at Sancerre: I have tried almost everything here and it's insanely good. I really like the Flores/Harmonie and the Charlelouise red is one of the best Pinot Noir you can have.
  • Jonathan Pabiot at Pouilly: Who doesn't love Poully Fumé, I like Leon and Luminisance for special ocassions. It's a great bottle for 2 😈
  • Philippe Gilbert at Menetou Salon: Great wine, love there simplest "Domaine blanc". Great value and absolutely lovely.
  • Melaric at Samur: I mostly drink red here, Tandem is an easy drinkable light red, pure Cabernet Franc. "Billes de Roches", when you need some power and fruit
  • Amirault at Saint Nicolas de Borgeuil: My wines are still waiting to be drank. "Vau Renou" and "Gravilices", both amazing.
  • Wilfrid Rousse: I love the "vin 100 soif", drink without moderation!

Bourgogne

I love Pinot Noir...🍷

  • Maison Vallet (couldn't find there website): The wine is insane, it's is probably my favourite white, period. The Macon village drinks so easily and it's so pure! Drink without moderation
  • Nicolas Maillet: Good priced Organic Bourgogne, I like the Aligoté
  • Domaine des rouges-queues Discovered by a friend, neightbours to his mom. Tried the Haute-cotes-de-beaune, excellent wine from a micro producer.

Savoie

This region is producing very high quality wine now, and has moved to another league. Any of these producers bottle rivals with other more "prestigious" regions.

  • Domaine Giachino This is the wine that made me love my region. Very high quality and beautiful bottles. Love the "Altesse" and all the "Jacqueres", particularly la cuvee "Primitif" that is very mineral and acidic. They also have nice red wines with old grapes like "Persan".
  • Chateau de Lucey I loved the "Chapitre 18/19" cuvees, pure Altesse, insanely floral. There is a new owner that I have not tested, we will see. It is also the best Pinot Noir from aroud here. My cellar still has plenty if you want to try.
  • Cotes Rousses Discovered this at my favorite local restaurant (Le Pinson) and they are producing boutique quality wine, it's not cheap but is from another league. Have tried multiple bottles but don't have on stock.
  • Domaine Aricocques at Frangy I was pleasently surprised when I tried this, very mineral and fruity. Perfect for cheese and sea food. I actually had ceviche with one of them. I loved the cuvee "Pan!" as it is very mineral!
  • Thomas Finot You can buy any bottles with your eyes closed. It also has some wine in Crozes-Hermitage, so you can also try that. It has very high quality Pinot Noir that drinks like water =).

Alsace

  • Emile Beyer An amazing alasacian producer from Eguisheim. I love everything, the Eguisheim collection is best value for the money, never is a bad moment to open a pinot gris or a resiling. From the "grands crus" I love the Pfersigberg and Eichberg.
  • Had another one here, have to dig...

Rhone

  • Domaine des Bruyeres at Crozes Hermitage, very good red with more sun and good equilibrium. I like this wine a lot, totally recommend there cuvees. I like the "Beaumont" and "Georges", havne't tried their white.
  • Amadieu Great producer from Rhone-sud. I drink this regularly and always have on my cellar. I nejoy particularly the "Rasteu" and "Cotes villages". I found this winery by my father in law, now we order every year together.
  • Have tried other good bottles here and there, but not organic or very overpriced, so my list is short for the moment.

Champagne

  • Only have one, as my wife's family produces: Desbrosse This is a family owned and produced champagne (from A to Z, not many do that anymore). Also, it's the best value for the money I have ever seen. My favorite is la cuvee Millesime.

Italy

As I live close to Piamonte region, I mostly drink that.

  • Hilberg Pasquero The best Nebbiolo, period. Better than most Barolo's I have tried.
  • I have 12 different bottles to try that I got a Eataly Torino, will add them once finished.

The bests places to drink/buy wine

  • My top bar recommendation is Une note de Vin a Nevers. Pierre has probably the best wine selection of Bourgogne/Loire. You can also buy wine from him, I recommend setting a budget and letting him choose. He is very active on Twitter: @hal_vingt
