Lambda Island Open Source is hiring remotely a part-time maintainer to help us manage our open source efforts. This includes over a dozen projects like the Kaocha test runner, deep-diff, Regal, lambdaisland/uri, and Glögi.

This is not about doing major feature work, instead it's about everything else, all the other things that go into running a successful open source project.

Note that this is in a sense a "public" position, you will be visible in the community, interacting with users, and partly becoming the face of Lambda Island Open Source. Make sure that is something that fits your personality.

Goals

Provide visibility and continuity for these projects, and support the growth of a community of users and contributors.

Tasks

  • manage and promote our Open Collective
  • order and send out stickers
  • triage issues
  • shepherd PRs
  • update READMEs, CHANGELOGs and other docs
  • cut new releases
  • make sure projects have working CI set up
  • write for the blog and twitter account about our open source work
  • make the project more accessible for potential contributors (contributor docs, first-timer issues)
  • assist and encourage contributors
  • bug fixes and other incremental improvements

Skills

  • good spoken and excellent written English
  • a clear, friendly, and patient communicator
  • speak fluent gif and emoji
  • enough Clojure knowledge to understand and make changes to our projects (you will get time to get acquainted with these projects, and you get mentorship)
  • able to work independently and manage your own time and calendar
  • community minded

Initial renumeration is 1000 EUR per month, on a freelance basis, for an expected workload of 40 hours per month. The work is done in your preferred location, and you manage your own time. This is paid partly through the Lambda Island Open Source's Open Collective, the rest is covered by Gaiwan.

Make sure you understand the tax implications of freelancing in your locality, and are able to send invoices, before applying.

Note that non-technical skills are more important here than Clojure chops. If you are not sure if you know enough Clojure, but the position fits you well otherwise then please do apply. We provide mentoring, and this is great way to level up in Clojure and raise your profile within the community. Being less senior could even give you an advantage, since it provides a good perspective to help figure out how to make these projects more accessible to less experienced contributors.

This is a great position for people who are not in a position to take on full-time work at the moment, like students, people taking care of young children or family members, etc.

To apply please email your CV (pdf or web link) plus a written motivation to jobs@gaiwan.co. Including examples of your writing (blog posts, READMEs, technical docs, published articles, etc.) would be much appreciated. Applications close end of September, candidates will be contacted between mid and late October. Please do not send reminders or pings, everyone will get a response.
