In defense of blocks for local scopes (Part 2)

Some have leveled the criticism that "part 1" of this post is unnecessarily contriving a problem that doesn't really exist in "good code" -- if you really need to narrow a scope of some declarations in a function, then that function is too complex already and that bigger problem is what you need to fix.

Just to be extra clear: if a chunk of code is already reasonable to make a function, that's not the sort of code I'm talking about in either of these blog posts. If it's being called multiple times, or if it's completely independent and makes sense as its own logical chunk, make it a function. I'm talking about a different sort of code, a set of a few statements related to each other, that declare one or more variables, but which logically still belong inside another function. That's the context here.

OK, let's stop talking about this stuff abstractly.

A Real Example

Custom Elements + Redux toolbox & examples

An approach to binding Redux to custom elements

The code here captures some of the patterns I used in the "real estate" demo app discussed in my talk End to End Apps with Polymer from Polymer Summit 2017.

There are many ways to connect Redux to custom elements, and this demonstrates just one pattern. The most important aspects are to try and lazily-load as much of the otherwise global state management logic along with the components that need them (as shown via the lazyReducerEnhancer and addReducers calls in the connected components), and to consider the tradeoffs you make in terms of coupling components to the store.

The pattern shown here of creating a stateless component and then a subclass that connects it to the store addresses a potential desire to reuse app-level stateless components between more than one application context, so the subclass provides a degree of decoupling from the concrete store, at the expense of more boilerplate. Articles, tutorials and tools for modern front-end development.

Problem: What does a Modern Front-End Development Workflow Look Like?

I want to start writing libraries and large applications using the JavaScript language. However, I don't know how to setup the project and which build tools to use. What I do know is that the JavaScript community has moved way beyond using browser developer tool plugins and strategically-placed console.log() statements to debug, test, and build code.

I need help.

Below, I will keep track of articles, tutorials and tools I come across as I search for a way to bring my front-end development chops up-to-date.
