Quick Guide to Dublin Pubs

Pubs

All of these pubs are within 20 minutes walk of each other in the city center. Its a subjective list, everyone has their own preferences in Dublin. The common thread is these pubs tend not to have music or TVs. All added to this map.

  • Mulligans, Poolbeg St - this is probably my favourite pub in Dublin, its a little off the beaten track but it features in Joyces Ulysses.
  • Stags Head - just across Dame Street from the Temple Bar area, a wonderful old style Victorian pub.
  • Peters Pub - one of the smallest, but most professional, pubs in the city, on South William Street near Grafton St.
  • Nearys - just off Grafton Street, another Victorian pub, downstairs is lovely.
  • Kehoes - just off Grafton Street, can get very busy.
  • The Palace Bar - just on the edge of Temple Bar, the backroom is lovely.
  • Grogans - an "eclectic" crowd. Can be great, can be truely awful.
  • The Long Hall (only twitter) - the name is pretty descriptive.

Pubs with music

  • Any of the bars in Temple Bar will have a trad session of some sort, the quality will vary. Personally I avoid Temple Bar. The best is probably going to be St. John Gogartys, but personally I think it is a horrible pub. I worked for a number of summers (a long time ago) in the bar across the road from it - The Auld Dubliner - but I have no idea what the music they put on is like these days.
  • If you are in Dublin on a Sunday night see if there is a session happening upstairs in The Duke off Grafton Street. This is a low key session that a lot of the professional musicians go to to swap tunes at.
  • O'Donohues on Baggot St/Merrion Row - there is often a trad session here, it will be in the backroom which can be a struggle to get a seat in. Its a very busy pub, and gets some politicians visiting (although most of the politicians and journalists go to Doheny and Nesbitts across the street).
  • The Cobble Stone in Stoneybatter - this is one of the homes of trad music in Dublin.

Theatre

  • If you have time, and something interesting is on, a trip to The Gate or The Abbey is worthwhile. The Gate generally do superb productions, and specialize in Samuel Beckett plays.

Tours, Museums Etc

There is lots to do in Dublin, this is just a few suggestions.

  • Trinity College - just walk around and soak up the atmosphere, if its a sunny day they may be playing cricket on the sports grounds. We never paid much attention to the cricket, but its a nice spot to have a beer. The Book of Kells is a must see.
  • Chester Beatty Libray - is located in the grounds of Dublin Castle, wonderful place to visit, with an unusual collection.
  • National Gallery
  • Irish Museum of Modern Art
  • Walk around Georgian Dublin - try to see Stephens Green and then go over to Merrion Square. There is a wonderful statue of Oscar Wilde in Merrion Square, and as city parks go its much, much calmer than Stephens Green. Close by is The Pepper Cannister church.
  • Christchurch Cathedral - well worth a visit if you have time, and the remains of St. Valentine are near by.
