I've created a docker container with the prereqs.... it's set up so that the user can still use their favorite editor, outside of the container and then compile, etc., in the container. It's a first go, but should suffice for my needs (I didn't want to install a bunch of packages on my box)-- if there's other pieces needed it shouldn't be terribly hard to update.
