List of Japanese TV I've enjoyed, so I can remember next time someone asks after I start enthusing again.

That List of Japanese TV

Crunchyroll

Oh My God

Exciting, surprising, violent, unusual

  • Attack On Titan - Probably the most exciting thing I've ever watched on TV. Grim, violent, everyone shouts and/or dies, theme tunes to remember, good twists.
  • Mob Psycho 100 - anarchic, expressive animation and completely over the top. Like Akira done by the Rhubarb and Custard, no, by all the artists from an entire series of Channel 4 late night animation programmes

Serious Drama

  • 91 Days - A sort of Godfather-lite mafia series (not watched much of it yet)
  • Joker Game - Spies in the 1930s.
  • The Perfect Insider - A sealed-room murder mystery with some VR and incest.

Sad and Beautiful

  • Erased - Time travel story about a man trying to save an abused girl in his class from a serial killer.
  • Mushishi - Probably my favourite TV anime. It was intended to be watched before bed to make people feel sad and sleepy.
  • She And Her Cat - a short series about a struggling young woman and her elderly cat.

The Manga Epics

These are hundreds of episodes long, and based on long-running manga comics.

  • Bleach - Like watching someone else play a beat-em-up video game for 360+ episodes. But in a good way.
  • Gintama - Cycles between utter silliness and an actual plot.
  • Durarara - Irish ghosts on motorbikes, internet chatrooms and Tokyo street gangs. Complicated interwoven plots, hundreds of characters, mature - hard work, but good.

Both Sorts of Funny

  • Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun - High school romance comedy about people drawing high school romance comics.
  • Poyo Poyo - a round cat.
  • Hozuki No Reitetsu - The bureaocracy of hell. Fantastic art and funny, spoofs/refers to a lot of Japanese folklore.
  • Lovely Muuco! - A dog. She loves her owner, and carrier bags.

What... am I watching?

  • Thunderbolt Fantasy - huge glove puppets in elaborately embroidered costumes talk to each other dramatically and then have over-the-top sword-fights. All slightly tongue-in-cheek.
  • Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! - It's one of those "Magical Girls" series except with boys instead. Schoolboys in bizarre outfits fight tofu monsters, etc with their love fountains. Awful. I've been told to include this on the list.
  • Bananya - Cat bananas.
  • Gugure! Kokkuri-san - This is quite good, and then you realise someone decided to make a series about a small autistic girl living with violent demonic perverts.

Just Nice. Aah.

These are just nice.

  • Polar Bear Cafe - Talking animals, a cafe, a spoiled panda. Aah.
  • Folktales From Japan - kids TV. It's sometimes quite surprising.
  • Sweetness and Lightning - Widowed single parent learns to cook for his toddler.
  • Flying Witch - A teenage witch moves to the country and very little happens. But it's all nice.
  • Space Brothers - A car designer wants to be an astronaut like his brother. This fits into the Manga Epic category too.
  • Silver Spoon - Boy goes to farming school. Pigs! Cheese! Horses!
  • Non Non Biyori - Girl moves to the countryside. Nothing much happens, but everything is nice. Update: there is one very, very funny moment.
  • My Love Story!! - Large boy meets small girl, they over-think everything. It's nice.
  • ShiroBako - Life at an animation company. Actually a bit stressful for me because it reminds me of a job I had a long time ago, but it's still nice.
  • Wakakozake - Woman eats nice things and says "Pshuu!" happily.
  • Encouragement of Climb - Girls go hiking and overthink things.
  • Gingitsune - Messenger Fox of the Gods - Girl lives in temple with nice fox god. Nothing much happens.

Live Action That's Cheesy But Surprisingly Good

All of these feature cheesy over-acting

  • Five Star Kyoto - A tour guide helps people by solving their personal problems.
  • Wakakozake - Live action version of the series. Woman eats more food, drinks lots of booze and says "Pshuuu!" happily.
  • Time Taxi - Taxi driver takes passengers back in time to have a second chance. Cheesy fun.
  • Mr Nietzsche In The Convenience Store - worth watching for the over-acting and unintentional giggling from the actors alone.
  • Antiquarian Bookshop - Bookshop owner solves mysteries about books.

Start Off Rather Well And Then Disappoint

  • Charlotte - Kids with superpowers. Good, and then they just decided to skip to the end, which you expected to be 60 episodes away.
  • AldNoah.Zero - Big Robots Fight Each Other series with an unusual setting that starts off very well, and then goes wobbly in places, and then goes completely wobbly.

Watchable, Pretty Good

  • Alderamin On The Sky - Fantasy steampunk war series
  • Sword Art Online - People get trapped in a World Of Warcraft sort-of VR game. Teenage boy wish-fulfilment really, but watchable.
  • The Eccentric Family - Shape-changing tanuki raccoon-dogs living in Kyoto.
  • ReLife - Unemployed 20-something man is given youth and sent back to school to try again. Not as creepy as it sounds.
  • Beautiful Bones - Possibly autistic woman obsessed with skeletons solves skeleton-related mysteries.
  • Berserk - I don't know what's going on but it involves huge swords, orgies, demons, cannibalism, torture, the undead, etc. Like Evil Dead but without the humour.
