I am pleased with what I read in the article. I think the approach taken by the | |
Harvey Mudd College is well thought-out; it takes a multi-faceted approach to | |
illicit a cultural change like this, and it seems a lot of programs and | |
workplaces try to take the "magic bullet" approach and completely miss the mark: "Oh! I bet if we do this | |
thing...". I'm glad to see a program take such real steps towards driving a change which can | |
be adopted by other institutions. | |
I'm not well-versed on the statistics regarding women in STEM fields; however, a cursory google | |
search of government statistics shows a roughly 50% discrepancy in the proportion of women in STEM | |
careers versus women in the US workforce. Given the proven nature of this discrepancy, as this | |
is not the first time this trend has been noticed, I'm surprised that these methods haven't been | |
broadcast more widely. | |
I was asked to write about how the article made me feel. To be honest, it inspired a mixture of | |
hope and irritation. I'm hopeful because the change that Harvey Mudd has seen as a result of its | |
programs is astounding! I really hope it indicates a nation-wide trend among education programs; | |
I believe that the success of the program would translate well to other underserved groups. My | |
irritation is with a dysfunctional education system, as a whole, which can't seem to implement | |
solutions to glaring educational issues with social implications. It's both astounding and | |
frustrating that equality is still as far off the mark as it is as the discrepancy between | |
men and women in the STEM workplace likely, I think, indicate a deeper and mroe divisive problem. | |
Overall, I'm more hopeful than anything, and I'm excited to be in attendance in a program that has | |
implemented similar programs and constructions. |
