Ubuntu 22.04 on MacBook Pro 2017 (A1707, MBP 14,3)

Summary

Notes to install Ubuntu 22.04.4LTS (Upgraded to 24.04LTS) up and running on my 2017 MacBook Pro 15 inch (MacBookPro14,3).

Now everything except the TouchID (Fingerprint), Suspend and Hibernation seems to work for me.

About Ubuntu 24.04LTS: I tried to install Ubuntu 24.04 and didn't have success. There was a crash issue during installation. https://bugs.launchpad.net/subiquity/+bug/2065310 But I installed 22.04 and upgraded it to the 24.04LTS later and it working same as 22.04.4.

Ubuntu 22.04 on MacBook Pro 2017 (A1707, MBP 14,3)

Summary

Random set of notes and links that have helped me in the saga to get Ubuntu 22.04 up and running on my 2017 MacBook Pro These notes are mainly for myself in the event that I have to do this again some day. But if you find them helpful, that's great.

Important update

Unfortunately the MacBookPro that I bought second hand turned out to be a dud with some serious hardware flaws that didn't show up until a couple of months after I'd bought it.

I've since purhcased another laptop so I'm not going to be able to maintain this GIST.

I'll leave it here for now in case others want to contribute updates, or clone it. If you feel it's out of date or misleading or a waste of time, let me know in the comments and I'll remove it.

Set up msmtp to send emails emails from Ubuntu/Debian Servers

Setting up email with SMTP on Ubuntu/Debian Servers

I used to sift trough my shell history and bookmarks every time I set up a new testing server in order to be able to send mails. So this should help...

Be aware don't use ssmtp anymore. It's unmaintained and has been removed from Debian and Ubuntu will most definitely follow suit.

Install msmtp

How to Setting Up a Comodo SSL Cert

How to Setting Up a Comodo SSL Cert

  • I advice you to buy SSL Certs from officially Comodo only , or some SSL reseller whose you trust.

These are the steps I went through to set up an SSL cert. Purchase the cert

Prior to purchasing a cert, you need to generate a private key, and a CSR file (Certificate Signing Request). You’ll be asked for the content of the CSR file when ordering the certificate:

openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout example_com.key -out example_com.csr

IDRAC6 Virtual Console Launcher
Use this as an example on how to start the virtual console without the need of Java Web Start or accessing it from the web interface.
You can use the user and password that you use for the web interface.
You need an old JRE... I used 1.7.0_80 from the Server JRE package, also I have tested successfully 1.7.0_79 with MacOS.
You don't need to install it, just extract it or copy the files in "jre" folder.
Open the viewer.jnlp file that you get by launching the virtual console from the web interface with a text editor.
Note the urls to the jar files. Download the main jar file avctKVM.jar and the libs for your operating system and architecture.
Extract the dlls (.so Linux, .jnilib MacOS) from the jar libs.
