Everything About CUDA in WSL2 Ubuntu

Prerequisites, i.e. the most important things

  1. Time of writing: Jan 18, 2023. The following assume you're trying to install CUDA on WSL2 Ubuntu.

  2. Check support matrix first before you install any version of CUDA, because chances are the latest CUDA does not have cuDNN support yet, then you'll have to re-install older version if you found out later.

    https://docs.nvidia.com/deeplearning/cudnn/support-matrix/index.html#cudnn-cuda-hardware-versions

    At the time of writing, the latest cuDNN version is 8.7 and it supports CUDA 11.8.

  3. Windows 10 must be build 20145 or later.

Windows SSH Server with Password-less Key Authentication and Default WSL2 Shell

Windows SSH Server with Password-less Key Authentication and Default WSL2 Shell

Disclaimer: I am not a Windows Admin and I'm not even that good with PowerShell.

I wanted to be able to SSH into my Windows laptop directly into Linux. I also wanted to disable password authentication and only allow public key (RSA in my case) authentication.

Scott Hanselman wrote a blog post on how to make your default WSL2 distro your default shell for SSH. Windows OS Hub published an article on using public key

Why you probably shouldn't use a wildcard certificate

Recently, Let's Encrypt launched free wildcard certificates. While this is good news in and of itself, as it removes one of the last remaining reasons for expensive commercial certificates, I've unfortunately seen a lot of people dangerously misunderstand what wildcard certificates are for.

Therefore, in this brief post I'll explain why you probably shouldn't use a wildcard certificate, as it will put your security at risk.

A brief explainer

It's generally pretty poorly understood (and documented!) how TLS ("SSL") works, so let's go through a brief explanation of the parts that are important here.

The general (simplified) idea behind how real-world TLS deployments work, is that you:

Just some notes about my attempt to upgrade to webpack 4

If you enjoyed reading this, I'm intending to do more blogging like this over here: https://cdgd.tech

This is not a complaint about Webpack or v4 in any way. This is just a record of my process trying it out so I could provide feedback to the webpack team

Hmm... I don't see any docs for 4.0 on https://webpack.js.org. I guess I'll just wing it. All I need to do is npm i -D webpack@next, right?

+ webpack@4.0.0-beta.2

Workbox recipes

Workbox runtime caching recipes

Your Service Worker script will need to import in Workbox and initialize it before calling any of the routes documented in this write-up, similar to the below:

importScripts('workbox-sw.prod.v1.3.0.js');
const workbox = new WorkboxSW();

// Placeholder array populated automatically by workboxBuild.injectManifest()

Export TOTP tokens from Authy

Exporting your 2FA tokens from Authy to transfer them into another 2FA application

IMPORTANT - Update regarding deprecation of Authy desktop apps

Past August 2024, Authy stopped supported the desktop version of their apps:
See Authy is shutting down its desktop app | The 2FA app Authy will only be available on Android and iOS starting in August for details.

And indeed, after a while, Authy changed something in their backend which now prevents the old desktop app from logging in. If you are already logged in, then you are in luck, and you can follow the instructions below to export to tokens.

If you are not logged in anymore, but can find a backup of the necessary files, then restore those files, and re-install Authy 2.2.3 following the instructions below, and it should work as expected.

The Simplest Terraform with Docker on macOS

If you'd like to experiment with Terraform on macOS locally, a great provider for doing so is the Docker provider. You can get set up in a few simple steps, like so:

1. Install Docker

Install Docker for Mac if you have not already.
