Generally, the Git proxy configuration depends on the Git Server Protocol you use. And there're two common protocols: SSH and HTTP/HTTPS. Both require a proxy setup already. In the following, I assume a SOCKS5 proxy set up on localhost:1080
. But it can also be a HTTP proxy. I'll talk about how to set up a SOCKS5 proxy later.
When you do git clone ssh://[user@]server/project.git
or git clone [user@]server:project.git
, you're using the SSH protocol. You need to configurate your SSH client to use a proxy. Add the following to your SSH config file, say ~/.ssh/config
:
ProxyCommand nc -x localhost:1080 %h %p
The PATH
is an important concept when working on the command line. It's a list
of directories that tell your operating system where to look for programs, so
that you can just write script
instead of /home/me/bin/script
or
C:\Users\Me\bin\script
. But different operating systems have different ways to
add a new directory to it:
- The first step depends which version of Windows you're using:
- If you're using Windows 8 or 10, press the Windows key, then search for and
Microsoft partnered with Canonical to create Bash on Ubuntu on Windows, running through a technology called the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Below are instructions on how to set up the ssh server to run automatically at boot.
- Edit the
/etc/ssh/sshd_config
file by running the commandsudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
and do the following- Change
Port
to 2222 (or any other port above 1000) - Change
PasswordAuthentication
to yes. This can be changed back to no if ssh keys are setup.
- Change
- Restart the ssh server:
sudo service ssh --full-restart
- With this setup, the ssh server must be turned on every time you run Bash on Ubuntu on Windows, as by default it is off. Use this command to turn it on:
